CHAPTER 13

Suzanna paced the confines of her hotel room. Rachel and Claire sat in chairs near the window watching her movements. Suzanna’s body was stiff with anger, her fists clenched at her sides.

She stopped on the opposite side of the room and wheeled around to face them. “I can’t believe the judge didn’t throw out the case!” she fumed. “There is absolutely no evidence against Hawk. It’s obvious those men committed the murder. That’s how they knew where the body was buried. Surely no one believes that they happened upon Hawk burying it and the only way they could subdue him was to beat him within an inch of his life! That’s absurd. They had four guns. If he had attacked them, wouldn’t one of them have shot him?”

“It does seem like a flimsy story,” Rachel agreed.

Claire nodded. “Unfortunately, it all comes down to Hawk’s word against theirs. Their story doesn’t sound very logical, and they aren’t very credible witnesses, but it’s still going to be up to a jury to decide who they believe. After all, someone committed the murder.”

“Do you think the jury will believe Hawk?” Suzanna asked.

“In a perfect world, absolutely,” Claire replied. “However, we don’t live in a perfect world, and there will be some who will believe the worst of him just because he’s part Indian.”

“That’s so unfair!” Suzanna exclaimed, stomping her foot into the floor.

“Yes. It is,” Claire replied.

Suzanna walked over to the bed and sank onto its edge, facing her friends. “So, what do we do? How can we help him?”

“I’ll send a wire to New York and have my solicitor, Mr. Mueller, hire a defense attorney. The attorney should arrive before the trial,” Rachel offered.

Suzanna felt a spurt of hope, desperately wanting to grasp onto anything positive. She often forgot about Rachel’s wealth and connections in New York City. She and Chance lived humbly. They rarely spoke of their business ventures. “Thank you. I’m sure having an experienced attorney will make a difference.”

“Chance will do what he can to find out the murdered man’s identity. Maybe that will help to determine who killed him,” Rachel added.

“Nathan will help, too,” Claire stated. “The key is to find some evidence linking Dave and his bunch to the dead man.”

The other two women nodded in agreement.

“Sure looks like a hangin’ is comin’ your way,” Dave sneered. Shorty and Brandon snickered at the statement. “I plan on stickin’ around to watch. It oughta be fun.”

Sitting on his bunk, Hawk stared straight ahead, the image of Suzanna standing up and defending him against the scorn of the crowd filled his mind. She’d looked magnificent. He’d wanted to wade through the crowd, scoop her into his arms, and carry her away from all of this. His gut clenched in anger. More than anything, he wanted to protect her from the pain and humiliation that was sure to come when the jury found him guilty. In spite of his innocence, he had no doubt that was exactly what was going to happen.
